I love to dance. I love music to be playing in my house whenever possible. There is music for all moods and whether you enjoy letting the DanceDJ on your favourite radio station be at the helm. Or whether you like to create your own playlist, it really doesn’t matter. I always am quite amazed at how many steps my Fitbit shows in the morning. And that’s pre school run, just from me prancing about in the house to some tunes! And yes you can dance whilst making porridge!!

The act of dancing has so many benefits physical and mental. It can increase strength in your heart and lungs, increase muscle strength and tone, core stability, increase flexibility and coordination. And not forgetting helping you to get that all important serotonin pumping making you to feel more confident, happy, relaxed. Basically giving you a greater overall sense of wellbeing.

Can dance help anxiety?

Research has been done in this area. A study was done in a Swedish city where they researched a number of teenage girls that were suffering with physical health problems and mental health issues such as stress and anxiety.

The 112 girls were split into two groups, the intervention group and the control group. The intervention group were sent to twice weekly dance classes, lasting about 75 mins for 8 months. These classes focused on fun and the joy of movement – not performance.

The girls that took the classes improved their own self-rated health more than the other group, and the positive effects continued for a year after the intervention.

We are meant to move, so what will you be dancing around to today, and when will you make that time to turn up the volume and have a boogie! It will make you feel good I guarantee it!
