As you know I love my cycling and hill training is now my best pal! This month a friend of mine and I took ourselves off and did the post Wiggle 100Wiggle 100. And although the B&B where we stayed had the worse mattresses known to man, and neither of us got a good night sleep. It was a great day out cycling in some beautiful countryside.

Training for these events is great fun, and after the Velothon in Wales in July, I realised the importance of hill training.

Love those hills!

Now, cycling up big hills in the beginning, is, quite frankly pretty horrid. And Bath has some great hills to practice on. Initially when you start hill training, you might have to stop, quarter way up, half way up who knows. And when you do stop, you can guarantee there will always be some bike dudes, like Tour riders on your back wheel.  They speed off, quite often chatting to their pal like they are cruising through a park on a Sunday afternoon!

You feel the slight embarrassment creep in. The “Why am I doing this to myself” question comes up and along with that. Your lungs are on fire and the legs feeling like jelly.  But like anything, the more you do it the better it gets. And before long you are getting up those hills and little by little improving all the time. Untill one day you are smashing them, passing other poor newbies in pain! And saying “Bring it on, I laugh in the face of hills”… or words to that effect!

In fact the first time I made it up Widcombe Hill in Bath – I whooped out loud and made a poor chap jump out of his skin!

Determination is key. And the sense of achievement is something else. Achieving our goals is so important to our wellbeing in life, it makes us truly happy and satisfied. So do you have any goals you are aiming for? If so and you are looking to up your focus do get in touch.
