Nervous System Regulation
Modern life can place enormous demands on the mind and body. Constant pressures from work, family life, technology and everyday responsibilities can leave many people feeling overwhelmed, exhausted or permanently “on edge.” Often, people describe struggling to switch off, relax properly or feel fully present, even during moments of rest.
This is frequently linked to the way the nervous system responds to stress.
Your nervous system is designed to protect you. When the brain senses danger or pressure, it activates a stress response to help you cope. This response can be incredibly useful in short bursts, but when stress becomes ongoing, the nervous system can remain stuck in a heightened state of alertness. Over time, this may contribute to anxiety, poor sleep, irritability, burnout, low mood, emotional overwhelm and difficulty concentrating.
Nervous system regulation is about helping the body and brain return to a calmer, more balanced state.
How I help...

I use Solution Focused Hypnotherapy alongside relaxation techniques and breathwork to gently support nervous system regulation. Sessions are designed to help calm the mind, reduce stress responses and encourage the brain to spend more time in a relaxed, responsive state rather than a reactive one.
Get to know yourself, I mean, really
Many clients find it reassuring to understand how the brain works under stress. Learning about the nervous system can help explain why you may be feeling overwhelmed, anxious or emotionally drained, and importantly, why these reactions are not a personal failing. Often, simply understanding the science behind stress can help remove some of the fear and frustration surrounding it, and people often have lots of 'penny- dropping' moments in the initial consultation.
Hypnosis itself promotes deep relaxation and can help activate the parasympathetic nervous system, the part of the body responsible for rest, recovery and restoration. During trance, the mind becomes calmer, breathing often slows naturally, and the body has an opportunity to reset. Over time, repeated experiences of relaxation can help create healthier patterns within the brain and nervous system.
Breathe, breathe, breathe...
Breathwork can also be a powerful tool in regulating the nervous system. Gentle breathing exercises can signal safety to the brain, helping reduce feelings of panic, tension and overwhelm. Many clients find that learning simple breathing techniques gives them practical tools they can use in everyday life whenever stress begins to build. And that is exactly why I trained as a Breathwork Coach in 2025.
Nervous system regulation is not about avoiding stress altogether. Life will always contain challenges and pressures. Instead, it is about building resilience and flexibility so that your mind and body can respond to stress more calmly and recover more effectively afterwards.
Solution-focused hypnotherapy takes a forward-looking approach, focusing on strengths, progress and positive change. Whether you are experiencing anxiety, burnout, overwhelm, poor sleep, or simply feeling disconnected from yourself, therapy can help you regain a greater sense of calm, clarity and control.

Viv is a really gifted therapist who has helped and inspired me to recover my enthusiasm for life, develop a greater sense of self-determination and overcome some of the lingering impact of long-term trauma. Working with Viv has enabled me to develop practical strategies for coping with stress and emotional dysregulation, as well as better sleep and relaxation. She’s also helped me find the mental space and clarity to set clearer goals for the future and a greater belief in myself to reach them. I feel I’ve made more progress more quickly than with many of the talking therapies I’ve tried over the years, and it’s been a relief not to have to delve into the past. Working with Viv is a really positive and forward-looking experience, and I’ve loved my weekly sessions with her.

Viv was instrumental in helping me relax and keep a clear head while I headed toward donating my left kidney. She also helped me write my “Preparation, Operation and Recuperation Mission Statement”.
We picked it apart a few times, making sure we got all the wording right for my brain and body to absorb all the positivity. This played an integral part in keeping my head on my shoulders leading toward the op and helped me find a route to positive reinforcement for my healing.
I was so well prepared, I entered the surgery without a care in the world! And my healing was swift and complete, as we’d planned!
Thanks Viv, for supporting me through this one-time epic experience!!!
