There’s something about the end of August that makes us pause. Perhaps it’s the lighter evenings getting shorter; for those with children, the
thought of schedules speeding up. Or maybe it’s simply that feeling that summer is gently coming to an end and a new chapter is waiting just around the corner.
For many of us, September feels like a second New Year. New school terms. New routines. New goals. New opportunities. And while January often comes with pressure to change everything, September can offer something much gentler: a chance to begin again.
You don’t have to wait for January
We often think of January as the time to make changes. We set resolutions, create ambitious goals and promise ourselves that this year will be different. But meaningful change doesn’t need a particular date. In fact, starting when you feel ready – rather than because the calendar says you should – can make change feel much more achievable.
A new beginning might be something big, such as starting a new job, moving home or changing direction. But it can also be something much smaller. Perhaps it’s deciding to take better care of yourself. Going for a walk instead of staying at your desk. Finally making that appointment you’ve been putting off. Learning to say no without feeling guilty. Making time for something you enjoy. Or simply deciding that you don’t want to keep carrying the same worries and patterns into the next chapter of your life.
Your brain likes familiar – even when familiar isn’t helpful
One of the reasons change can feel difficult is that your brain is designed to look for what is familiar. Your brain constantly takes in information, predicts what might happen next and tries to keep you safe. Familiar patterns require less mental effort. That means you can sometimes find yourself repeating behaviours, thoughts or reactions simply because your brain has become accustomed to them. Even when those patterns aren’t particularly helpful. This is one of the reasons people can say: “I know I need to change, but I just can’t seem to do it.”
It isn’t necessarily a lack of willpower. Your brain may simply have become very good at following an established pathway. The encouraging news is that your brain is also capable of learning. With repetition, attention and the right support, new patterns can become more familiar too.
A fresh start doesn’t mean becoming a different person
Sometimes we approach change as though there’s something fundamentally wrong with us that needs fixing: I need to become more confident. I need to stop worrying. I need to get myself together. But what if a new beginning wasn’t about becoming somebody else? What if it was about reconnecting with the person you already are underneath the stress, self-doubt, overthinking and busyness?
Solution-Focused Hypnotherapy takes a different approach. Rather than spending all of our time analysing what’s wrong, we focus on where you want to go and what you would like to be different. We begin to build a picture of your preferred future. And sometimes, when you start looking towards where you want to be rather than constantly looking backwards at where you’ve been, things can begin to feel possible again.
What would your next chapter look like?
Imagine waking up six months from now and noticing that things feel different. Perhaps you’re calmer. You’re sleeping better. You’re worrying less. You’re responding differently when things don’t go according to plan. You’re feeling more confident. You’re making decisions more easily. You’re spending more time doing things that matter to you. You haven’t become a completely different person. You’ve simply made a series of small changes that have gradually taken you in a new direction. That’s often how lasting change happens. Not through one huge transformation, but through lots of small steps.
You don’t need to have everything figured out
A new beginning can feel exciting, but it can also feel uncomfortable. There may be uncertainty. You may not know exactly what comes next. And that’s okay. You don’t need to have the entire path mapped out before taking the first step. Sometimes you only need to know the direction you want to travel in. As we move towards September, perhaps that’s the question worth asking yourself:
If I could make one positive change in the next few months, what would I like it to be?
Not what you should change. Not what somebody else thinks you need to change. But what would genuinely make life feel a little better?
Your September fresh start
Perhaps this September doesn’t need to be about a long list of resolutions. Perhaps it’s simply an invitation to pause, look forward and ask yourself: “What would I like more of in my life?” More calm? More confidence? More energy? More connection? More fun? More time for yourself? Sometimes a new beginning starts with nothing more complicated than a decision. A decision to do things differently. A decision to be kinder to yourself. A decision to take that first small step. And you never know where that first step might lead.
