As we approach the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year, many of us find ourselves drawn to the light.
The extra hours of sunshine encourage us outdoors. Gardens are in bloom, nature is thriving, and there is often a sense of energy and possibility in the air. It’s no wonder that across cultures and throughout history, the Summer Solstice has been a time of celebration, reflection and gratitude. Yet there is something else the solstice can remind us of.
Where there is light, there is also shadow.
We often think of our lives in much the same way. We celebrate the parts of ourselves that feel bright and easy, the moments when we feel confident, motivated, calm and capable. These are the qualities we are often happy to share with the world. But what about the other parts? The moments of self-doubt. The worries that creep in at night. The mistakes we wish we hadn’t made. The days when our confidence feels fragile, or our emotions feel overwhelming.
Many of us spend a great deal of energy trying to hide these shadows, even from ourselves. We tell ourselves we should be stronger, happier, more productive, or more resilient. We compare our inner struggles to other people’s carefully curated highlights and wonder why we don’t seem to have it all figured out.
Light and shadow
The truth is that being human means experiencing both light and shadow. Without challenge, we would not recognise growth. Without sadness, we might not appreciate joy so deeply. Without moments of uncertainty, we would never discover our capacity for courage. The shadow parts of ourselves are not signs that something is wrong. Often, they are invitations to pay attention.
Anxiety may be telling us that we need rest, support or reassurance. Frustration may highlight a need for change. Fear may reveal something that truly matters to us. Even our mistakes can become valuable teachers when we allow ourselves to learn from them rather than judge them.
In Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, we often talk about helping people focus on what is working well in their lives. This doesn’t mean ignoring difficulties or pretending challenges don’t exist. Instead, it means recognising that we are more than our problems. Just as a tree needs both sunshine and rain to grow, we develop through a combination of positive experiences and life’s inevitable challenges. The goal is not to eliminate every uncomfortable emotion but to learn how to navigate them with greater understanding and compassion.
The Summer Solstice offers a gentle opportunity to pause and reflect.
Perhaps you might ask yourself:
- What strengths have I developed this year?
- What challenges have taught me something valuable?
- Which parts of myself am I ready to accept a little more fully?
- What light can I recognise within myself today?
- And what shadow might simply need kindness rather than criticism?
As the sun reaches its highest point in the sky, remember that perfection is not the goal. Growth is not about becoming someone different. It is about learning to embrace all the parts that make you who you are. The light and the shadow. The strengths and the struggles. The confidence and the uncertainty. Together, they tell the story of a life that is being lived, learned from and continually growing.
So as you enjoy the longer days and lighter evenings, perhaps take a moment to appreciate not only the light around you, but also the wisdom that can be found in your shadows. Both have a place. Both have something to teach us. And both are part of what makes us beautifully human.
